Tuition costs for PA students matriculating in Fall 2008 are:

First Year
$27,843 divided into three equal installments.

Second Year
$27,843 divided into three equal installments.

Tuition is charged each term of enrollment for Fall, Spring and Summer terms. There is no tuition difference for in-state and out-of-state residents. Additional first and second year program costs are instruments, books, student fees (including a computer fee), rent, food, health insurance, and personal miscellaneous expenses. Housing costs in Durham are moderate in comparison to the rest of the country. A line item budget is normally ready in January of each year for the next academic year. The budget will be included in the interview packet and may also be obtained by contacting the Office of Financial Aid at financial_aid@mc.duke.edu or 919-684-6649. All students are required to carry adequate health insurance throughout their enrollment in the PA program. If the student does not elect to take the Duke Student Accident and Sickness Insurance policy ($1,690 annually), evidence of other comparable health insurance coverage must be provided. In addition, the Student Health Fee ($819 annually) is mandatory for all students. The Student Health Center Website is http://healthydevil.studentaffairs.duke.edu.

Financial Aid
Financial aid application packets are distributed during the financial aid session of the admission interview. Students are requested to submit all the required information as soon as possible. All financial aid awards are made on the basis of documented financial need. Required documents include the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), DUMC Financial Aid Application, and prior year federal income tax returns. PA applicants may complete an application on the FAFSA website.

Qualified students may be eligible for Stafford Loans up to $21,000 ($8,500 Subsidized and $12,500 Unsubsidized) and private alternative loans for the remaining educational costs up to the school approved Cost of Education budget. Limited scholarship funds through the PA program are also available. Applicants are also encouraged to request information and application forms from clubs, organizations, foundations and agencies as soon as possible after applying for admission to the program. The Internet and many libraries have information on various sources of funding. Other known sources of funding include:

  • The North Carolina Student Loan Program for Health, Science, and Mathematics provides financial assistance in the form of loans up to $6,500/year for North Carolina residents. These loans may be canceled through approved service in shortage areas, public institutions, or private practice. Applications can be obtained by visiting the NC State Education Assistance Authority web site or writing to NC State Education Assistance Authority PO Box 14223 RTP, NC 27709-4223 Phone 919-549-8614.

  • The U.S. Public Health Service has several programs that offer scholarships, stipends and loan repayment to PA students who commit to varying periods of employment in medically underserved settings. Information on these programs may be obtained by calling 1(800) 221-9393 or visiting the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) web site. One program offered by the U.S. Public Health Service is the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholars Program. In the past 15 years, 54 Duke students have been awarded scholarships to attend the PA Program through the NHSC. We strongly urge PA applicants to consider application to the NHSC program.

  • Student Financial Aid for North Carolinians. A booklet outlining sources of funding specifically for North Carolina Residents. This booklet is available at financial aid offices and local libraries. Or visit the Student Financial Aid for North Carolinians web site.

  • Employment: Some first year students are employed part-time; however, the rigor of the academic curriculum usually prevents the student from maintaining part-time employment. Students who wish to be employed during their training must comply with the program’s academic schedule and are prohibited from working more than twenty hours per week. Part-time employment must never interfere with class or clinical schedules. Any student unable to maintain adequate academic standing will be asked to terminate his/her employment. Because of the demands of the clinical year, it is difficult or impossible for the second-year student to work.
